How can you use rejection to fuel and drive success? New business owners often ask me: “What will be the hardest thing I’ll have to overcome?” The answer is easy—rejection. So many people don’t take rejection well because they view it from a personal standpoint rather than a business standpoint. In business, you have to understand that you can’t take everything personally. Rejection is going to happen—it’s just a part of life. The difference between successful business owners and unsuccessful business owners is how they handle the rejection.
No Doesn’t Mean Never
No doesn’t mean never. Read that again and say it out loud. Just because someone says “no” to doing business with you right now doesn’t mean they’ll never want to do business with you. Often, people say no simply because your business doesn’t work with their life right now. Maybe they’re still social distancing because of COVID-19 or saving money to pay off debts, you never know what’s going on in someone’s life. Instead of viewing their “no” as a rejection, think of it as a “not right now.”
Rejection Can be Fuel
A “no” can also be an opportunity for you to improve and refine your delivery. Are you using storytelling to capture your audience? Are you letting your passion shine through by being knowledgeable about the products you’re selling? Have you been to World Conference or National Training to polish your skills? Are you following up on a “no” at a later date? All of these things are necessary to show your business in a positive light and successfully sell the products you’re excited about.
I encourage you to change your mindset. Instead of letting a “no” break you, make it strengthen you. Never let rejection cause you to second guess what you’re doing. Do something each and every day that puts you one step closer to bettering yourself and making rejection less likely. Remove the emotional connection from hearing “no” and realize that no real success comes without rejection.
